Another Sunny Day: The First Ever Discord/Harmony Mix!

[UPDATE]: These links have long expired, despite my promise to update them at least a few times. I don't have the time to update each track, but I have updated the zipped file which can be found below or, if you're just lazy to scroll down the page, here! Drop me a note in the comments if this file expires and you'd like to hear the mix.

I promised a treat, and I'm sorry to say that despite the speculation I will not be linking you to my leftover peeps. In actuality, I'm really not sure how I could link people to left over seasonal confections. Besides, I ate all my marshmallow goodness not long after Easter. Mmm.... peeps.... No. The treat I promised is so much more exciting than peeps. It's a mix! Woot! I had started out making a mix for myself to accompany the lovely weather we've experienced in Eugene these last two weeks, and then it occured to me that I've got no reason not to share this mix with the rest of the world. So here it is, downloadable track by track, or scroll down to the bottom for a zip of the whole thing:

Another Sunny Day: The First Ever Discord/Harmony Mix:

Looper - The Treehouse This track is just adorable, and ever spring like. The album as a whole didn't keep my attention for too long, but a few select tracks stood out for me, this opening one in particular. Short, sweet, cute, and sunshiney good!

Final Fantasy - This Is The Dream of Emma and Cam This is one of the first tracks to make the cut, and one of two tracks that inspired the collection as a whole. As I visited Astoria a few weeks ago to meet my future coworkers for my internship I took a drive through the beautiful little town and listened to this track over and over again. It was originally selected not because it had a spring-like theme to the lyrics, but because it just sounded nice. Then there's that part at the end where he starts going on about keeping the clouds away. poifect!

Iron & Wine - Sunset Soon Forgotten Iron & Wine had a reserved place on this set from the outset, but I couldn't decide which one. The fact is I normally reserve his music for a late and hot summer evening. 10 p.m. hits after a long warm day and all I want to hear is Sam Beam plucking away like he's sitting on a porch in a rocking chair somewhere down in the southern end of the country. But for me Our Endless Numbered Days is for just a little cooler temperature than some of his other music. It has a more dynamic quality which warrents a wider array of seasonal listening. This track won on the merits of its title alone, and it fit with the rest of the mix.

Dar Williams - Fishing In The Morning My wife was looking through her iPod trying to help me select a few tracks. I sat down with this one first feeling guilty about not selecting anything she'd offered up yet. Then I listened to it more closely and realized it fit perfectly. The lyrics, the sound. It's a spring time wonder!

Belle and Sebastian - Another Sunny Day You might have already guessed that this track was the other inspiration for the mix, since it's also its namesake. Belle and Sebastian started to actually rock out a little more on this album, thankfully, but their music remains as temperate as the country they call home. The music, even at its hottest, never warms up too much, making them the perfect springtime soundtrack.

Norah Jones - Sunrise She may not be indie enough for some of you, but I still dig her, especially this album. The bass matched with the percussion on this track just blows me away. I really, really, REALLY like it. And you should too.

Looper - Impossible Things #2 So the appearance of Belle and Sebastian and some of their offshoots its pretty significant on this mix. Looper headed off away from B & S some time ago, and like I mentioned before, created only a few tracks that really grabbed me. This is the other one. It's a very cute story.

Electric Light Orchestra - Mr. Blue Sky Probably the most obvious and expected inclusion on the entire mix. For a moment I considered cutting it because of its massive popularity and predictable selection, but then I reconsidered. It's just too fitting to pass up, and it's a great song. Why leave it off just because it's popular?

The Velvet Underground - Who Loves The Sun? Feeling good yet? Did ELO put a big fat goofy grin on your face. HA! I smite thy happiness with the power of Lou Reed. It seems sunny and happy at first, and yet the lyrics tell the sad sad tale of one who cannot appreciate the sun, flowers and rain. *sniff*

Cat Stevens - The Wind Okay... okay... I'm sorry! You can stop crying now. I shouldn't have reveled in your sadness so much. Would you feel better with a little Cat Stevens? It's warm, it's hopeful! It's the best damn song he ever wrote. It's the only reason to get his album Teaser and Firecat. It's just plain brilliant, and not as sad. I promise not to break your heart again...

Petra Haden and Bill Frisell - Yellow So I'm not such a fan of Coldplay. I don't hate them, I just never really got into them. Apparantly Petra Haden wasn't so into the inclusion of this track on the album she recorded with Bill Frisell. Then he recorded the backing track anyway and played it for her and she was convinced. I am now too. It's a beautiiful song, and in my humble opinioni this is Bill Frisell at his very finest.

We Will Build - Rain and Sun Yeah I've been talking about these guys for some time now. And I probably will for a while yet to come. There's very little to complain about here. It's just catchy and pretty and interesting all at the same time.

I'm From Barcelona - Treehouse No it's not the same version as above. But needless to say if I had not chosen a title referring to the sun in some way, this mix would've been called The Treehouse.

that dog. - Retreat From The Sun This one could be a summer time song instead, but I fell in love with it in the springtime, and I hope you will too. This is the perfect song for the warming weather. It makes you want to take off, skip class and head to the beach. Especially when Rachel Haden freakin' ROCKS that bass at the end of the track.

Architecture In Helsinki - Spring 2008 I don't have a ton to say about this track. It's cute. It's about spring. What more do you want?

Nick Cave - Here Comes the Sun This is really the only track more obvious than "Mr. Blue Sky" hence my decision to use Nick Cave's version rather than the Beatles. All said though, George Harrison was the best Beatle by far, so give the man his props.

Click here to download the whole thing in a zip file.

That's it folks. I hope this music puts a happy little smile on your face. I'll keep the files up for a couple weeks. After that drop me a line and we can work something out.

And a little credit I think is due. A whole mix and no Andrew Bird? This is a first in a LONG time for me...

KWVA Playlist for Friday, April 28, 2006

Sleepy McSleeperkins was me this morning. A fun show anyway! But the station is clearing out a lot of the rotation, which left me with few options this morning. I'm not sure what the deal was but i'm hoping for more music back next week. In the meantime, here's the playlist and the recordings. Sorry for the extra long first set.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Belle and Sebastian - Acts of the Apostle

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
We Will Build -White Furniture
Architecture In Helsinki - Do The Whirlwind
Smoosh - Find A Way
Calexico - Panic Open String
Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds

Highlights: Music-a-plenty to talk about today.

Smoosh, if you have not heard, is cooler than you are clock in only 12 and 14 years respectively on this hear planet. And in that time they've cranked out a hit album and shared the stage with such old-timers as Sonic Youth and The Flaming Lips. By 14 I had accomplished being the most irritating caller into 107.7 The End in Seattle, and that's just about it. To date, I still have yet to match their accomplishments... but just you wait Smoosh! You're cute appearances and catchy songs will only get you so far in this world! Do you think that you can get by just for being 12 and 14 and making cute music? Well, you can, but that's beside the point!

Smoosh - Find A Way

Jason Collett is a member of some band called Broken Social Scene, whoever the hell THEY are. There's also some woman with the last name Feist singing on it.

Jason Collett - Hangover Days (Featuring Feist)

Gnarls Barkley is Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse together, concocting some interesting sounds which bear more resemblance to psychedelic soul than to hip-hop. It's also quite enjoyable, but maybe I'm crazy.

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

Requests: We had one for the Plasmatics, and another for any number of hip-hop acts. I chose Prefuse 73 becauase it was the easiest to find. Thanks for the requests!

Next Show: Friday Morning 4 a.m.! Although I must confess that it's hard juggling all this stuff I've got going on lately. I'm not sure how much longer I can swing this. But for the moment I've only got about 4 to 6 shows left anyway before I move on to my internship, so who knows? That special treat I promised a week ago is still on its way, so just hang tight!

Random sidenote: ZT - Come to the Northwest sometime and we'll play with cars and dinosaurs!

KWVA Playlist for Friday, April 21, 2006

A little preparation goes a long way. Lately as my week goes along I've been keeping a notepad and jotting down songs I'd like to play on my Friday morning show. What a difference! When I get there I'm not blanking on what I've heard this week and what deserves a little airplay. My new iPod has helped considerably. Architecture in Helsinki, Tindersticks and Fourtet are all groups that I received from friends and relations and left to rot alone on my harddrive, never to see the light of day. But now they're coming out in full force, appearing on my headphones, and now the radio!

Also good news today. I've actually recorded the show. I do this every week, but the last two shows failed to record or failed to make it to my inbox when I mailed them from the station. Today everything seems to be in working order, with the exception of Part 2, which is clipped a little short at the end. So give it all a listen!

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

Boy Least Likely To - Be Gentle With Me
Architecture In Helsinki - Souvenirs
Smog - Hit The Ground Running
Cat Power - After It All
Calexico - Bisbee Blue

Anna Oxygen - Dream. Dream. Dreams.
DJ Cam - Love Junkee (J. Dilla Remix)
Anti Pop Consortium - Places I've Never Been
Mogwai - Friend of the Night
Dosh - You Can't Make Me Cry

Sufjan Stevens - Adlai Stevenson
Final Fantasy - Spell For A Weak Heart
Four Tet - As Serious As Your Life

Break

The Polyphonic Spree - Hold Me Now
Built To Spill - Conventional Wisdom
Tindersticks - Bathtime
Neutral Milk Hotel - The King Carrott Flower
We Will Build - Pleasant
Andrew Bird - The Naming of Things
Belle and Sebastian - Another Sunny Day

Highlights: Lots of great music today. In fact there's so much that I'm hesitent to pick anything out, indicating inaadvertantly that it's the very best. But let's pick out a few noteworthies for your interest.

Sufjan Stevens has a track on the Kill Rock Stars compilation The Sound The Hare Heard and this is a fantastic, albeit short, addition. I don't have much to say about this. Sufjan Stevens is musics current MVP, and has gained such a state of popularity that I've come to assume he's running an underground circuit of organized criminals, all dedicated to keeping him the favorite on every radiostation, blog and website. Whether his methods are pure or not, it's still pretty good music.

Sufjan Stevens - Adlai Stevenson

Once again let's give thanks to c for alerting us to another great band. I'm From Barcelona is quite the conglomeration of Swedish singers and musicians, in much the same fashion as The Polyphonic Spree (see today's show) but not quite as irritating as the robe clad rainbow children from Texas. I'd post it here, but you should really hop over to the post at I Guess I'm Floating. Both tracks are worth your time.

And finally, I want to once again recognize We Will Build, again a tip I received over at I Guess I'm Floating. I want to highlight them again because, well, they don't have a CD out, and the only press they're receiving is from blogs. So here it is. Once again, hope over to I Guess I'm Floating for their post on the band. Or snag it directly from the bad here.

Requests: I take back every kind word I've said about my listeners... Once again, no calls, no requests, no valentines and flowers. What's up guys? I'm a volunteer y'know. I demand some love for what I do!

Next Show: Next Friday, as usual! But I've got a special little treat cooked up for all y'alls coming up next week. I won't say more now, so I don't spoil the surprise, but I've got a special little bonus for all my friends online. Woot!

Andrew Bird talks about new albums, Eugene resident wets himself

Pitchfork Media reports that Andrew Bird is off on tour yet again, and working on a new album tentatively titled The Armchair Apocalypse. I'm waiting for official confirmation on this title since he's been performing a song of similar name at his shows which has been called the same title or "The Armchair Apocryphist."

The album, slated for an early 2007 release, will feature many of the same musicians as The Mysterious Production of Eggs plus electronic musician Dosh, a familiar face on my playlists as of late. Dosh is also working on a new album, and both are touring together like mad this summer. There are no dates set past August but I have high hopes that he'll be appearing in the Northwest sometime after then, perhaps at Bumbershoot? Please? PLEEEEEEEEASE?????

Bird claims that the new album will be more spacious, and has spoken previously about moving his music towards a more minimalist sound.

Not only that, but Bird is planning another (yes, ANOTHER) self released live album of music he's performed with Dosh. Fingerlings 3 perhaps? Anyone who's sat down and listened to some of his live tracks knows that these recordings are as welcome as any studio album. Fingerlings 1 and 2 are both as good as any official LP he's cranked out. Previously the albums have featured either solo tracks, using his looping device, or tracks backed up by the old Bowl of Fire Crew, Nora O'Conner or My Morning Jacket. I'm hoping this future release will include some of his more recent recordings with a drummer backing up the tracks. You can read more about the upcoming tour and the two releases (let's once again pause and appreciate that the man is giving us TWO new CD's in the next year! TWO!!!!) over at the Pitchfork Media News Room or as I have taken to calling them today, my best friends in the whole world. They've got some other news stuffs there that are uninteresting because they are not about Andrew Bird.

Mr. Bird, if you're out there... Your new live album should include "A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left" and that wicked awesome rendition of Ravel's string quartet that you did in Eugene. If you do, I'll be your best friend!

In the mean time, here's a few tracks for y'all's pleasure and amusement:

Andrew Bird - A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left (Live on Morning Becomes Ecclectic)

Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocryphist (Live on Morning Becomes Ecclectic)

Randomness Pt 3?

Continued randomness my friends. I have little to report music wise, but so much has happened in my personal life that I can't help but list a few highlights here.

  • First and foremost, my elder brother (often referred to here as an insufferable bafoon) married his long time girlfriend. They had a great ceremony and reception. It was awesome being part of it all and I'm really happy for them

  • Megan has accepted a job teaching biology and chemistry in the Federal Way School District. For those out abroad, Federal Way is south of Seattle and just north of Tacoma. We're looking around the area for someplace nice to live while we're there. This will limit my job options somewhat, but I'm a little more willing to commute than Megan is, so I'm keeping my options open.

  • Secretly we all know that Megan's job acceptance was just a thinly veiled plot to trump my acheivement of getting an internship for the summer. I'll be writing at The Daily Astorian for about 10 weeks from June to the end of August. I'm really excited to get the experience of working at a daily newspaper. My boss seems like he'll be pretty cool, and the area is fantastic. I'll be able to get off work and hike off to the beach for a break. Still working out housing. If anyone out there is looking for a roomie for the summer in Astoria, drop me a line!

  • I had one of the best interviewing experiences of my life, competing with my interview with my Andrew Bird interview from last year. This time I got to rub elbows with Tre Hardson, who many of you might remember as SlimKid3 from The Pharcyde. The Daily Emerald once again printed my article, and many thanks to both Matt (at the Emerald) and Martha (Tre's girlfriend) for organizing this whole thing. It was absolutely amazing to get to talk to such a creative mind and learn about being an indipendent artist. You can read the article here and also check out Matt's review of Tre's newest album SlimKid3's Cafe. Tre put on a great show last week in Eugene with Arrested Development's Speech, both of which will surely get some airtime in future KWVA playlists.

  • And also on the music side of things, I've entered the wild and crazy world of iPoders. I've been rocking it out like those sillhouette dancers all week with my new white shiney iPod in hand. What's really nice about it is being able to listen to all that music people have directed my way that never got a proper listen because they're sitting in the dusty depths of my computer. Those too will likely make appearances on future playlists

KWVA Playlist for Friday, April 7, 2006

Well it's been some time since I've posted. And I'm sad to report that there'll be no show to post along with today's playlist. This is due to some computer related complications. Normally I record the show on the station's computer, then mail it to myself from there. Well, the mailing portion just didn't work this time around. So instead I'll load y'alls up with some extra highlights today to tide you over, since I know y'alls been sitting around wondering where I was and when my next show would be posted. Well rest assured, you can now resume your lives normally now that you know what's going on. So without further ramblingness... the playlist!!!

Beth Orton - Rectify
Neko Case - The Needle Has Landed
Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Tortoise - Calvary Cross
Band of Horses - The First Song
The Go! Team - Huddle Flash
Johnny Boy - Johnny Boy Theme
Built To Spill - Gone
Islands - Don't Call Me Whitney, Bobby
Maritime - Tearing up The Oxygen
Boy Least Likely To - Be Gentle With Me
Belle and Sebastian - Funny Little Frog
The Concretes - Chosen One
We Will Build - White Furniture
Final Fantasy - Peach Plum Pear
Antony and the Johnsons - Frankenstein
Claudine Longet - God Only Knows
Flaming Lips - Goin' On
Futureheads - Skip To The End
The Pipettes - Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me
Calexico - Cruel
Wlico - Ashes of American Flags
Iron and Wine/Calexico - All Tomorrow's Parties
Andrew Bird - Oh Sister
Capricorns - Vega City
Subways - Oh Yeah
Sparks - Perfume

Highlights: Our Highlights today will be packed with more stories, puzzles and narratives that subsitute nouns with pictures than the magazine of the same name! Or at least it'll be packed with songs...

We Will Build is a new find that comes via one of my favorite blogs, I Guess I'm Floating. They posted a contest asking readers to submit a band that they had never heard of before, and they would choose the winner out of the near-hundred submissions. We Will Build was the band from the winning post. Woot! I really enjoy them. Dancy goodness. And the best part for you is that, although they have no album, all their music is available online! Hope over to I Guess I'm Floating's post for more information, a link to the bands MySpace and some of those lovely tracks. OR, listen to this one right here!

We Will Build - White Furniture

I've been listening to Neko Case for sometime now, but some how her existance dropped off of my radar. Furnace Room Lullabye is one of my favorite albums for the cool autumn overcast season, and yet everything she released after that just slipped by without my noticing. Luckily KWVA's rotation features her new album Fox Confessor Brings the Flood jarring my neglect. And the track "The Needle Has Landed" freaking rules my world right now. The melody of this song is amazing. One moment you think you're being dragged one way, then she whips you around and drags you another.

Neko Case - The Needle Has Landed

Have I mentioned before that I like Iron & Wine? I kind of do. I also like The Velvet Underground. Iron & Wine covering the Velvet Underground? That makes for one happy dj/blogger! I found this track on my first attempt at The Hype Machine. This little search engine is a music fan's dream come true. It searches blogs for tracks, and links you to the blogs. OR, you can just listen to the tracks on a playlist build off of your search. This lead me to a lovely blog called So Much Silence and a post featuring the NPR concert of Iron & Wine with Calexico. Thanks to whatever kind soul transferred those to an mp3 format. And thanks to Sam Beam and Calexico for their lovely rendition of "All Tomorrow's Parties." This track is sure to delight me and drive my wife nuts as I play it over and over again in the coming week.

Iron & Wine/Calexico - All Tomorrow's Parties

And finally, I've been meaning to post on Claudine Longet for some time. In fact, I've got like a freaking huge list of posts I've wanted to make, and I simply have not had the time. So in leu of a full post all about Claudine Longet, here's her version of the Beach Boy classic track "God Only Knows."

Claudine Longet - God Only Knows

Requests: Yeah, nobody loves me. No requests. Other than Jack's pretty regular Masonna requests, which I ignore each and every time.

Next Show: That'd be Friday morning again. And then again that afternoon for a One Band / One Hour featuring the lovely and talented Petra Haden.
